Brentwood boys win a thriller for title

James McPherson scored his only points of the night on an uncontested cut with 3.1 seconds left, giving Brentwood a 42-40 victory over East Nashville in the finals of the Above the Rim Tournament at Hickman County High School last night.
“The play was geared to clear out the side and spring McPherson free,” said Bruin coach Dennis King after the contest.  “Then they decided to double team, which made it almost too open.  I was afraid he was going to miss it because he was too open.”
The Eagles last chance to win, a half-court shot from mid-circle, banged off the rim harmlessly.
A quick start to the game left East ahead 15-13 after the first quarter, but the game became a grind for final 24-minutes.  The two teams were a combined 12-of-27 from the floor in the middle two quarters, with Brentwood leading 31-26.  The lead came courtesy of tournament Most Valuable Player Andy Schumpert, as the senior scored all eight third quarter points for the Bruins, including a pair of threes.
Brentwood packed a tight 2-3 zone that frustrated the Eagles for most of the game, compounded by cold shooting.  When East found the range in final three minutes, the complexion of the game changed.
“We’re up nine and I’m thinking spread the floor and win another easy game,” said King.  “I look up again and it’s tied.  I’m like, we might lose this thing.”
Schumpert ended the night with 12 points.   All Tournament Team member Grant Teichman added 6 and Jack Bautista finished with 11.
The win leaves the Bruins with only a single loss heading into the heart of the District 11-AAA schedule.
