Cal Turner, Jr. to speak at Breakfast With the Mayors Jan. 28

Retired Dollar General CEO Cal Turner Jr. will join Franklin Mayor Ken Moore and Williamson County Mayor Rogers Anderson for Franklin Tomorrow's first Breakfast With the Mayors, presented by First Farmers Bank, on Tuesday, Jan. 28, at Rolling Hills Community Church, 1810 Columbia Ave.

Downtown favorite Pucketts Grocery will be a food partner for the breakfast meeting.

In December, Turner was voted as the Lifetime Achievement Winner among the Nashville Business Journal's 2013 Most Admired CEOs.

"I'm just 73," Turner told those gathered for the ceremony. "There's a lot left."

Turner will speak on the topics of vision and leadership at the event, which will begin at 7 a.m. with breakfast and networking, with the program to start at 7:45 a.m.

While there may be a lot left, Turner has already accomplished so much. In December 1965, he began his career at Dollar General, the company founded by his father and grandfather in 1939. He succeeded his father as president in 1977 and as chairman in 1988. At the time of his retirement in 2003, Dollar General had grown into a New York Stock Exchange retailer with more than 6,000 stores in 27 states and annual sales in excess of $6 billion.

Mr. Turner has served on the boards of a number of civic and charitable organizations, including the Easter Seal Society of Tennessee, Inc., Fisk University, the PENCIL Foundation and the YMCA of Middle Tennessee. From 2000-2001 he was president of the Board of Governors of the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce. He has served as Chairman of the YMCA of Middle Tennessee and Lindsey Wilson College in Columbia, Kentucky and he is currently serving on the Board of Trustees of Vanderbilt University in Nashville.

Others joining First Farmers as sponsors for this year's series include Tennessee Equine Hospital, Williamson County Association of Realtors, Waddey & Patterson PC, Andrews Cadillac/Land Rover, and Alfred Benesch & Co.
Additional sponsors include Rolling Hills Community Church, and Grand Avenue Transportation.
