Ravenwood, Brentwood advance to wrestling regionals

Brentwood will join Ravenwood in the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association Region 6-AAA wrestling tournament today at Overton after securing the second spot Tuesday with a final day victory over Centennial.
Ravenwood, ranked 8th in the state, swept the District 11-AAA schedule and will face District 12-AAA runner-up McGavock.
In the final tri-match of the year Tuesday, both Brentwood and Centennial defeated Summit, leaving the Bruins and Cougars with only one loss in the district.  Brentwood captured the hotly contested match 39-30 to advance to the regionals and end the Cougars’ season as a team.
Brentwood will have to face District 12-AAA champion Overton today in a match scheduled to start at 5 p.m.
The winners of the two matches will advance to the TSSAA state duals, or team, championships January 31-February 1 at the Williamson County Agricultural Expo Center on Long Lane.
BGA will host the Small School Invitational Saturday to determine team qualifiers for the state event.  The Small School category is made up of mainly Division II-A with some Division I Class A schools.  The host Wildcats will join Webb School of Knoxville, Franklin Road Academy, Ensworth, Donelson Christian, St. Andrews-Sewanee and Pope John Paul II in battling for one of three spots in the state event February 1 at the Ag/Expo Center.  West Tennessee will have one representative, either Fayette Ware or St. George’s Independent School.  Those two will also be competing Saturday at BGA.
The Small School Invitational is set to begin at 10 a.m.
The state individual wrestling championship series will be held at the Ag/Expo Center two weeks after the team event.
