Letter to the Editor: Tech companies such as Google help drive US economy at critical time

To the editor,

In the face of a global pandemic, clamping down on an industry that provides crucial employment for Americans around the country is not an approach Congress should be taking.

Companies such as Google have continued to expand their facilities across the country. Google recently announced it will open new data centers in 14 states. One data center, opening in Clarksville, Tennessee, will bring 70 to 100 jobs. To inhibit this progress in any way is extremely detrimental to our nation’s growth as we continue dealing with the repercussions of Covid-19.

Earlier this month, the Senate Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on Antitrust, Competition Policy & Consumer Rights hosted a hearing (Stacking the Tech: Has Google Harmed Competition in Online Advertising?) that investigated Google’s acquisition of its market power and anticompetitive practices.

While it is important that tech companies be held accountable for their use of consumer data, now is not the time to be investigating tech companies over antitrust claims. The tech industry’s growth is essential in allowing the U.S. economy to recuperate after taking such a drastic blow from the pandemic.

We urge the Senate Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on Antitrust, Competition Policy & Consumer Rights to understand the negative impact a probe like this will have on an industry providing jobs in an already fragile economy.
