Parks and Rec facilities closed for Presidents’ Day
In observance of Presidents’ Day, Monday, Feb. 15, all Williamson County Parks and Recreation Department facilities will be closed.
Facilities will reopen at their next regularly scheduled times beginning Tuesday, Feb.16.
Join the Williamson County Community Band
The award-winning Williamson County Community Band is preparing for the 2010 concert season and invites interested people to join in the fun. Those who play or formerly played musical instrument, the community band is a great way to express your talent. Sponsored by the Williamson County Parks and Recreation Department, the community band has performed at Franklin on the Fourth, the Main Street Festival, Schermerhorn Symphony Center, local Memorial Day tributes and numerous other free local concerts since 2001. Under the expert direction of bandleader Ken Krause, the band performs marches, concert pieces and jazz at indoor and outdoor venues throughout the year.
The first rehearsal of the year will be held Thursday, Feb. 4. Rehearsals are held in the band room of Franklin High School, 810 Hillsboro Road, on Thursdays, 7-9 p.m. You may join at any time.

Seniors invited to tour Schermerhorn Symphony Center
The Williamson County Parks and Recreation Department invites area seniors to enjoy a trip to the Schermerhorn Symphony Center in Nashville, Thursday, Feb. 18. The center, inspired by European concert halls of the nineteenth century, is located on a full city block in downtown Nashville. Inside, Laura Turner Concert Hall features tiered seating, a choral loft, stage and custom-built concert organ. After a tour of the building, the group will enjoy lunch at the Piccadilly.
The group will leave the Franklin Recreation Complex, Thursday, Feb. 18 at 9 a.m. for a motor coach ride to the Schermerhorn Symphony Center. The group returns to Franklin at 1:30 p.m. The trip is $24 per person (includes transportation, tour and lunch). Space is limited, so don’t miss your chance to enjoy this fun and informative trip.
Registration for the Schermerhorn trip are ongoing at the Franklin Recreation Complex and ends when the trip is full. Registration may be made in person or by speaking with the receptionist at 790-5719, ext. 10 (credit card purchases must be over $20 and will include a small processing fee). No messages allowed.
To hold a reservation, payment must be received within five days of the initial registration. Payments may be mailed or made in person at the Franklin Recreation Complex, 1120 Hillsboro Road, Franklin, TN, 37064. Payment may be received by mail, over the phone or in person and is non-refundable after the final registration date unless the seat is filled from the waiting list. Participants may register up to one additional person for each trip.
Friday Night Fever Family Night – Salute to 1970s
The Williamson County Parks and Recreation Department will hold “Friday Night Fever” a family night event featuring a salute to the 1970s, Friday, Feb. 19, 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Franklin Recreation Complex. Break out your disco dancing shoes and bring the whole family for a night of fun. The evening includes a pizza dinner provided by CiCi’s, plus a family costume contest, dance contest, prizes and games. Spangler Entertainment will provide the music.

Adult flag football leagues
The Williamson County Parks and Recreation Department is accepting registrations for 2010 pro and recreational indoor flag football leagues at the newly renovated Williamson County Indoor Soccer Arena, 1878 Downs Blvd. in Franklin.
Registration for a Thursday night pro league will be held through Monday, March 1. The league is limited to six teams and will play a 10-week regular season schedule starting March 25, followed by a single elimination tournament in June. The team fee is $465 and players must be 18 years old to participate.

Aerobics: A variety of aerobics classes are offered daily through Feb. 28 (no class on Feb. 15) at the Franklin Recreation Complex, 1120 Hillsboro Road. Tae Kwon Do/MPact Martial Arts: People of any age and physical condition may participate in this Martial Arts program. Instructor Eric Melton designed the class to bring the beginner into a high level of physical well being. The adult class is offered on an ongoing basis, Wednesdays, 6-6:45 p.m. through Feb. 24. Yoga: You don’t have to be in great shape to do yoga! Yoga is a great form of exercise for people at all fitness levels. Each pose can be adapted and the stretching and strengthening of yoga will help in overall fitness and energy. Beginners’ yoga meets Thursdays, through Feb. 25, 5:45-7 p.m. and Level 1 Heart Centered Yoga meets Thursdays, 7:15-8:15 p.m. Bring a yoga mat to class. Rock, Rhythm & Roll – Drum Lessons: Learn to play the drums in this complete course. Lessons will be given on a real drum set, plus participants will learn to read and write drum music, all 26 American and 40 international rudiments, the role of a drummer in a working band and drum theory. Belly Dance: Belly dance will be held Mondays, through Feb. 22, 6-7 p.m. (no class Feb. 15). Instructor Patty Clark will introduce adult participants to the basics of belly dance including stretches, dancing techniques and a choreographed routine. Have fun while toning hips, thighs and abs. German for beginners: Whether you are planning a trip to Germany or would like to converse with German-speaking relatives, this class will enable students to hold a simple conversation in German and learn about German customs and culture. Baby Signs Parents Workshop: Baby Signs is a fun sign language class for parents who want to enrich the lives of their children by signing. Using Baby Signs increases communication and decreases frustration for the whole family. This parent workshop introduces daily living signs like mealtime and bedtime, plus other activities like outings, getting dressed, birthday parties and more. Designed as a night out for parents, though pre-mobile and nursing children are welcome. Cost is $55 (two-for-one: caregiver/spouse free). Optional resource kit available from instructor for $10. The Williamson County Parks and Recreation Department offers therapeutic recreation programs at the Franklin Recreation Complex, 1120 Hillsboro Road. WCPRD is a public organization, designed to benefit the community. No membership is required. Anyone can register for and participate in classes and programs–no facility pass is required. Therapeutic programs are led by Therapeutic Recreation Specialists who assist people with disabilities to develop skills, knowledge and behavior for daily living and community involvement. Bowling: All ages are welcome to meet at the Franklin Family Entertainment Center, Tuesdays, Feb. 9-23, 3-4:30 p.m. to practice bowling skills. Cost is $3 per visit (paid directly to the Franklin Family Entertainment Center) for an hour and a half of bowling fun. (Fee includes shoes and a ball.) Due to staff availability, one-on-one assistance is not available for this activity. No registration is required, but please arrive at the Franklin Family Entertainment Center by 3 p.m.
Fitness Fun: Challenge yourself to an invigorating, weekly workout. Teens and older are invited to join in easy-to-follow exercises designed to increase strength, flexibility and cardiovascular fitness. Participants must be independent in their personal care and able to follow directions in a group. The program is offered on Wednesdays, through Feb. 24, 4-4:50 p.m. Fitness Fun costs $12 total for the four-week session (no refunds for missed sessions). Super Saturday Respite: Individuals with disabilities (ages 6 to 23) are invited to enjoy games, crafts, music, swimming and more. Come dressed to swim and bring a towel, change of clothes, sack lunch, snack and a beverage for a day of fun. Personal care is provided. Respite is held, Saturday, Feb. 6, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and costs $20 per person. This event is for Williamson County residents only. Registration is required through Jan. 26. Recreation night – Valentine’s Party: Have a sweetheart of a time as you sing, dance and socialize with friends at the Franklin Recreation Complex. Young adults and older can enjoy a Valentine’s party, Thursday, Feb. 11, 5:30-7:30 p.m. The cost is $5 and includes a barbecue dinner and dessert. This is a therapeutic recreation program offered by the Williamson County Parks and Recreation Department and is a P.A.L.S. program (People at Leisure with Support) with caregivers required to stay with those needing support. Lifeguard training offered at County Recreation Centers
The Williamson County Parks and Recreation Department will offer comprehensive lifeguard training in February, March, April and May at two system facilities. Registration takes place at the center where the class is being held and must be made in person. Participants must be 15 years of age on or before the final day of the course. A pre-course swim test will be given.
Upon successful completion of the course, two American Red Cross certifications are awarded: Lifeguard Training with First Aid (good for three years), CPR for the professional rescuer, which includes Adult/Child AED Essentials (good for one year). CPR and Lifeguard re-certification are also being offered.
