Suspect charged with vehicular homicide following Wednesday’s fatal crash
Gregory Powers, 46 of Franklin, remains behind bars following Wednesday’s fatal crash that killed a Virginia man. The crash happened at 4:52 pm on Franklin Road near S. Berry’s Chapel Road. Thomas Schlapman, 45 of Lynchburg, Va. was pronounced dead at Williamson Medical Center after Powers crossed the center line and struck the motorcycle Schlapman was driving, head-on.
Powers, charged with vehicular homicide and failure to maintain a lane, remains in the Williamson County Jail on a $250,000 bond. Investigators believe that Powers was impaired at the time of the crash and are awaiting the return of blood alcohol test results. Charges may be added or amended, depending on those results. Powers was out on bond for a DUI and vehicular assault charge case filed by Franklin Police in July. He is due in court on that case tomorrow morning at 9 a.m.
Anyone who may have witnessed Wednesday’s crash, or the events leading up to it is asked to call Franklin Police at 615-794-2513.
