VeggieTales artist wins Herald mascot contest

A cartoonish newspaper named Harold with Muppetesque eyes and a round pink nose was selected as the mascot of the “Williamson Herald” newspaper, according to owner and publisher Derby Jones.

Jones declared the caricature the winner of a mascot contest the newspaper launched earlier this year. “Harold” was selected from a dozen entries.

“We were looking for a mascot that could represent Williamson County’s hometown newspaper,” Jones said. “A lot of talented people showed their creativity and had fun in the process. It was a hard decision, and I’m thrilled that we had such good feedback from our fans on Facebook, which helped me select the winning entry.”

The winning artist, Mike Sofka, won a $100 Visa gift card sponsored by Franklin Synergy Bank.

“Franklin Synergy was delighted to team up with the Williamson Herald to encourage our community to take part in the Herald Mascot contest,” said Aimee Punessen, senior vice president of marketing, public and investor relations with Franklin Synergy Bank. “The entries were wonderful and we heard from all parts of our community. We congratulate Mike Sofka on his winning entry and we look forward to seeing it become part of the history of the Williamson Herald.

Sofka is a graphic artist and web developer for Technology Marketing Toolkit, and previously worked for VeggieTales. Second and third place entries, a lifelike representation of a zebra swallowtail butterfly and a Disney-like duck named “Richard” respectively, also won prizes. Elizabeth Mancuso, the butterfl y’s creator, was awarded a $50 gift certificate to Sperry’s restaurant, and Evan Genter, the duck’s creator, won a $25 gift certificate to the Bunganut Pig restaurant.
