FSSD to review candidates for vacant school board seat

The Franklin Special School District will hold its monthly school board meeting at Johnson Elementary School, 815 Glass Lane in Franklin, Monday, June 10 at 6:30 p.m.

Board members will review candidates for a vacant board seat due to five-year Board Member Melanie Hembree’s resignation last month. Hembree announced that she was moving out of state leaving the seat open. Interested candidates 
may apply until June 10.

During its May 13 meeting, the Franklin Special School District Board of Education honored outgoing Board member Melanie Hembree for her five years of service. Hembree, FSSD Board Secretary, announced that she is moving out of state, leaving a vacancy on the six-member Board that will need to be filled until the August 2014 elections.
To serve on the Board of Education, interested candidates must be at least 21 years of age and residents of the school district. Board members are elected at-large on a non-partisan basis and shall be citizens of recognized integrity, intelligence, and ability to administer the duties of the office. To qualify, an individual must show proof of graduation from high school or receipt of a General Educational Development (G.E.D.) degree. (FSSD Policy 1.102)

The Board approved the following process and timeline to appoint a new school board member.
A letter of interest must be submitted to Board Assistant Carol Riordan, (507 Highway 96 West, Franklin, TN, 37064) on or before June 10, 2013. Proof of graduation from high school or receipt of a General Educational Development (G.E.D.) degree must be included.
A work session will be scheduled to interview qualified applicants.
A vote will be taken at the July 15 school board meeting.
Candidates are also encouraged to review the Tennessee School Boards Association’s New School Board Member Packet ( in order to understand the Board’s roles and responsibilities. Interested candidates are strongly urged to consider running for the position when the seat comes up for re-election in August 2014.
