The van was in motion when the a portion of the split tree fell directly upon it. Neither of the two people in the van were injured. The front portion of the van took a direct hit from the falling tree, causing significant structural damage and crushing its windshield, rendering the vehicle undrivable.

A large portion of the tree fell across thick wires supported by wooden utility poles, stretching them nearly to the ground. A police officer on the scene said those particular wires were phone utility cables. There were no report of power outages in the area, she said.

The tree, which appeared to have been more than 100 feet tall, was a prominent feature of the landscaping of ClearView Baptist Church, located at 537 Franklin Road. It had been significantly damaged during the thunderstorms Wednesday evening and was scheduled to be removed. However, the tree gave way before workers could do so, according to Michael Smith, associate pastor.

“We had been working on it, as you can see,” he said, standing near cords of neatly sawed logs adjacent to the splintered trunk of the fallen tree.

All lanes of Franklin Road were blocked by the felled tree, causing the Franklin Police Department to close a half-mile stretch of the thoroughfare between Mallory Station Road and Moores Lane for what could be hours, according to an official at the scene. The incident took place around 1 p.m. Traffic was snarled along roads that feed into Franklin Road through early afternoon, including Mack Hatcher Bypass, where westbound cars were backed up past Cool Springs Boulevard.
