Watermelon Festival to celebrate the sweetness of summertime

People will be spitting seeds “unbelievable” distances and scarfing down watermelon with their hands tied behind their backs at this year’s 2nd Annual Watermelon Festival.

Families will gather at the Franklin Farmers Market on Saturday, Aug. 24 to celebrate this sweet summer fruit.

In addition to the Watermelon Seed Spitting Contest and the Watermelon Eating Contest, the festival will include games, face painting and music for the entire family to enjoy. Individual slices of ice-cold watermelon will be sold for a dollar.

As they do every Saturday at the market, Middle Tennessee farmers will sell a variety of locally grown and produced goods, and visitors can talk with them about how and where their produce was grown.

As the market’s Creative Services Director, Lisa Tidwell is responsible for planning and advertising the festival.

“It’s a celebration of a delicious summertime fruit that everyone loves,” Tidwell. says “But it’s also a family celebration. The market is not just a place where you go to get fresh food. It’s also social. People can go there and visit with neighbors.”

Tidwell expects this year’s festival to bring in even bigger crowds than it did last year. Some customers may arrive at the farmers market and stumble upon the festivities, but the festival has been well-advertised and for many market visitors, the day is highly anticipated.

The Franklin Farmers Market is located at The Factory at Franklin. The Watermelon Festival will take place on Saturday, Aug. 24 from 8 a.m.-1 p.m.
