Gas leak in Franklin causes evacuation

A few area businesses off Carothers Parkway in Franklin were evacuated this afternoon due to a natural gas leak at Carothers Auto Repair Service, 3975 Carothers Parkway.

According to a representative of the auto repair shop, a car backed into an exposed above ground gas pipe, absent of a concrete covering, which caused the leak a little before 2 p.m.

The Franklin Fire Department responded to the scene.

As a precaution, Atmos Energy who responded to make repairs, evacuated a few surrounding businesses as a precaution. However, all workers soon returned to their buildings.

“It is our policy to evacuate surrounding areas whenever there is a gas leak,” said Denise Manning, public affairs manager with Atmos Energy in Franklin.

“Everything is safe and our crews are finishing repairs. The shop’s gas service should be restored in the next couple of hours if not sooner,” Manning reported about 3:50 p.m.
