Mary Angela Johnston, known throughout her life as Angela, was born on Christmas Day in 1935 to Ellen and Daniel Parry in Ebbw Vale, Wales. Mrs. Johnston passed from this life on April 10, 2019 and is now with her Heavenly Father and loved ones who went before her.
Angela attended school in South Wales. She worked as an auxiliary hospital nurse before attending university, studying domestic science. This prepared her well for her profession as a domestic science teacher.
While visiting relatives in Surrey, in the south of England, she met Laurence William Everett Johnston. Angela and Laurence married in 1959, and the couple moved to the north of England. While there, Angela worked at Tulketh School where she became head of the Domestic Science Dept. It was here that the couple also welcomed three sons.
Eventually, the couple moved to Long Beach, California, where Laurence continued his career as a chief flight test engineer on the KC10 program for Boeing. The couple also resided in Yuma, Arizona before making the move to Tennessee following retirement so that they could be closer to their son, Neil, and his family.
Although retired, they remained busy working with Red Cross Blood Drive, Meals on Wheels and helping out family and friends.
Angela was always a very religious person and followed the teachings of the Lord. She and Laurence became members of The First Presbyterian Church of Spring Hill, where they resided. Both were very active in the life and activities of the church, and as a result, they enjoyed a special group of friends.
Angela returned to the UK in 2015. There, she worshiped at ChristChurch in Grantham where she was an active member of the church community.
Angela died on April 10, 2019 in Grantham, Lincolnshire, in the United Kingdom following a short illness.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Laurence, following a tragic vehicle accident in 2010.
She is survived by three sons, Neil Johnston (Jill) of Franklin, Gareth Johnston (Jennifer) of Riehen, Switzerland and Ian Johnston of Grantham, Lincolnshire, UK; brother, Cedric Henry Thomas Parry (Ann), of the UK; five grandchildren; and one (soon to be two) great-grandchild.
There will be a service of remembrance for Angela on May 11 at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Spring Hill. Officiants will be Rev. David Sawyer and Rev. Dr. Chris Adams. Angela’s family invites all of Angela’s many friends and acquaintances to join them in celebrating the life of this extraordinary woman.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to The First Presbyterian Church of Spring Hill, American Cancer Society or American Diabetes Association.
