Obituary: Dr. G. Kenneth Ken Williams

Dr. G. Kenneth “Ken” Williams, 81, died July 11, 2013.

He was born in Detroit, Mich. to parents, Vale and Willette Williams. He grew up in Lebanon, Tenn. and attended Lebanon High School and Castle Heights Military Academy. As a young man he went on to attend the University of Kentucky where he received his BS and MS in Mathematics. He played football for Kentucky under head coach Paul “Bear” Bryant. He received his doctorate from the University of Virgina.

Dr. Williams taught briefly at Notre Dame before accepting a position in the Math Department at Southwestern (now Rhodes College) in Memphis, Tenn. He taught at Rhodes from 1968 until 1995. He chaired the Math Department many years and received the Clarence Day Award for Outstanding Teaching in 1992.

He was a member of Evergreen Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder and deacon.

Dr. Williams is survived by his wife of 59 years, Barbara T. Williams and his four children and spouses: daughters, Dr. Kenna J Williams of Cookeville, Tenn., Barbara L. Williams of Franklin, Tenn., Terri A Williams, PhD, (Kent) of Hartford, Conn. and a son Scott D. Williams (Sharon) of Franklin, Tenn. He leaves his seven grandchildren who all lovingly referred to him as, “PaPa.” He is also survived by his older sister, Cornelia W. Matthews of Muskogee, Okla. His older brother, Junior, died while serving his country in World War II.

The family requests that any donations be made to Rhodes College: “Ken Williams Memorium.”
Services will be held Saturday, July 20, 2013 at 3 p.m. and visitation is from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. prior to the services at Williamson Memorial Funeral Home.

Arrangements are by Williamson Memorial Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Franklin.
