Obituary: Kathy Nelson Baker
Former Birmingham, Ala., resident, Kathy Nelson Baker, 60, died July 9, 2013 at her home in Atlanta, GA.
Kathy is preceded in death by her father, Richard Jesse Nelson.
Kathy is survived by her mother, Kathryn Nelson, her sister and brother-in-law, Kim and Clay Branch, two nephews, Nelson and Cole Branch, some wonderful aunts and uncles, many cousins and friends.
Kathy was born in Birmingham, AL on March 18, 1953. She graduated from Banks High School in Birmingham in 1971.
Kathy was married to Walter L. Baker, III “Bake” on August 25, 1973.
Kathy graduated from University of Alabama Birmingham and became certified to teach high school. Kathy became best known as a teacher and a homemaker. She taught at Wenonah High School in the late 70s.
Kathy moved to Franklin, Tenn. with her husband in the early 80s. Kathy made friends easily and quickly moved into leadership roles in The Franklin Junior Auxiliary, the Garden Club, and The United Methodist Womens Group at Forrest Hills UMC. In the early 90s, Kathy sadly divorced, but continued to live in the Nashville area until October 2001 when she moved to Atlanta to be close to her sister.
A memorial service will be held at St. John UMC in Atlanta on Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2013 at 1:30 pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made to St. John United Methodist Church, 550 Mt. Paran Road, NW, Atlanta, GA 30327, in thanksgiving for the life of Kathy Baker.
