Obituary: Gladys Davis Whitley
Mrs. Gladys Davis Whitley, age 97 of Franklin, Tenn., died Jan. 25, 2014. Whitley was the daughter of the late Watson Hay Davis and Lillie Pewitt Davis. She attended Hillsboro High School in Williamson County and graduated in 1936 as valedictorian of her class. She attended David Lipscomb College and graduated from Murfreesboro State Teachers College. One of her first teaching experiences was a one room school near Burwood, Tenn. where she taught first through eighth grades. This school had no indoor plumbing or drinking water. A teacher for many years in the Williamson Co. and Franklin School Systems, she also taught at Battle Ground Academy and the Sawny Webb School at Culleoka, Tenn.
She was a member of the daughters of the American Revolution. She was also a devout member of Franklin Main Street Church of Christ and Jackson Heights Church of Christ, Columbia, Tenn.
She is survived by children Barbara Davis, Edward (Katherine) Whitley, Leslie (Tammy) Whitley and Betty Wyatt; seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2014 at Williamson Memorial Funeral Home, Andrew Roberts officiating. Interment Mt. Hope Cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandsons.
