Happy Fourth of July
By Debbie Henry
The Preamble to the Declaration of Independence, states that all have the rights of "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." Basically, it is saying that everyone has the right to live how they would like to live, and to enjoy what they would like to enjoy, as long as it doesn't infringe on the rights of others. This is the essence of America. This country was built on the pillars of tolerance, liberty and equality.
The United States has always been viewed as a land where anything is possible, as long as one is willing to work for it. Countless immigrants come to the United States, seeking a better way of life, and a chance to live how they would like. Immigrants come from all over the world, from China to India and everywhere in between, in the hopes of having better lives. Here in America, immigrants are not chastised, criticized and persecuted for their culture and beliefs, but welcomed into American society with open arms. The vast majority of our families at one point in time were immigrants to this great land.
The American culture loves diversity and change. This can be found daily in most aspects of our lives. For example, when our European neighbors go out to dine, they go to one of the local traditional restaurants. When we Americans go out to eat, we have plenty of different options to choose from. Just take a look at Cool Springs, down one street is Mexican food, and down the next is, Italian. Very few countries are as diverse as ours due to the freedom we give individuals to express their own beliefs and cultures.
Freedom – this is the word that defines America. The freedom to live as one chooses to live; the ability to see that if one works hard enough, anything can be accomplished. For generations upon generations, the United States has been a beacon of hope to millions of immigrants around the world, looking to improve their lives. Their lives would not be able to be improved without the freedoms and open acceptance of other cultures America provides. “The great melting pot” would not be “the great melting pot” without freedom.
Freedom is America. God Bless the United States of America! Happy Fourth of July!
