Former LA Lakers head strength and conditioning coach to lead The Groves fitness program

Former Los Angeles Lakers head strength and conditioning coach Jim Cotta has joined The Grove as its fitness director. Cotta has worked with top-tier NBA athletes including Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O’Neal and the entire Lakers squad during their three consecutive championship runs in the early 2000s.

A longtime conditioning coach, Cotta has a thorough understanding of how the body moves and functions, which will be crucial to helping golfers prepare to play at a higher level. Even more, he is a Titleist Performance Instructor-certified fitness trainer. If you have a physical restriction that hinders your swing, Cotta will work with you to address the issue.

“People don’t realize how many factors contribute to a really solid golf swing,” Cotta said. “Factors like strength, flexibility, balance, endurance, nutrition, stability, power, vision and posture all influence the body’s mechanics,” he added. “Instead of simply suggesting a new club or glove, I’ll take a look at what will improve your body’s ability to swing harder and more accurately. I believe that a healthy golf game can improve your quality of life, because when it gets down to it, golf is a great form of exercise.”

The Grove management believes that Cotta’s experience and goals benefit all Grove residents.

“We are thrilled to have someone of Jim’s caliber at The Grove,” said Mike Green, a Franklin resident and the general manager at The Grove. “He is a consummate professional who understands the lifestyle we are creating. We know the members will benefit from his expertise and his commitment to obtaining results.”

Cotta expects to work not only with golfers and tennis players, but with all people who have an interest in exercising. Cotta has given expert advice in USA Today, The Wall Street Journal, The Los Angeles Times, ESPN and Men’s Health Magazine to help those who are not professional athletes improve their health and fitness.

Cotta’s professional sports training experience is not limited to the Lakers. He has trained athletes at the University of Texas, University of Nevada–Las Vegas and former NFL pro Terrell Owens. Owens, currently an unsigned free agent, was known for his explosive abilities on the field.
