Summit scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to end a lengthy Region 6-AAA championship at Independence Wednesday night in Thompson’s Station.
The Spartans avenged a District 11-AAA tournament loss to the Eagles and earned hosting rights in the Class AAA Sectional Round Friday with a 3-0 victory.
Summit will host Hendersonville for a chance to earn a state tournament berth. Indy will travel to Station Camp, which topped the Commandos 5-1 for the Region 5-AAA championship Wednesday.
The Spartans loaded the bases to open the ninth with back-to-back walks off Eagle relief pitcher Montana Dickerson. Dickerson entered after Chayton Gray tossed eight innings of two-hit, scoreless baseball that included 11 strikeouts.
Blake Money singled on the next at bat and Alex Runk followed with a hard grounder to shortstop to score the game’s first run in pinch-runner Drew Plummer.
A Summit fly-out followed, but Steven Smith was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded for a 2-0 lead. Cooper Hargrove entered at pitcher and Brody McGill batted into a fielder’s choice. Auston Kincaid earned a walk next as Runk crossed home plate for the 3-0 advantage. A ground out ended the top of the frame.
Slater Schield opened the bottom of the ninth with a single to center for the Eagles, but back-to-back strikeouts from pitcher Cole Hendrix and a groundout ended the contest.
Bricen Russell collected two of Summit’s four hits. Runk, Smith and Kincaid were all credited with RBIs.
Both Schield and Logan Molnar had a pair of hits for the Eagles.
