State Hoops – Brentwood Academy girls vs. Ensworth, DII-AA Championship

Too much Ensworth. Too much Dontavia Waggoner.

Waggoner poured in 31 points and guided the nationally-ranked Lady Tigers to their 45th consecutive victory with a 73-53 win over Brentwood Academy in the Division II-AA championship game Saturday at Lipscomb’s Allen Arena.

Ensworth capped an unbeaten season with a 29-0 mark and downed the Lady Eagles for third time this season in the fourth consecutive meeting in the finals.

Blair Schoenwald scored 17 for BA (22-8), which was making its eighth straight championship appearance. Maggie Brown added 15 and Jaz Harmon closed with 11.

Ensworth forced 19 turnovers and controlled the tempo from start to finish. The Lady Tigers held a 24-3 advantage in points off turnovers and out-rebounded BA 36-24 – led by Waggoner’s eight boards – while dominating second-chance opportunities with a 17-1 offensive rebound advantage.

Much like all season, the Lady Tigers had the answer for each BA run. After giving up the first eight points, the Lady Eagles pulled within 19-15 on a Harmon layup with 3:45 to play in the first half.

Ensworth closed the half with a 10-4 run to hold a 29-20 advantage at intermission.

Early in the third quarter, Jaila Lee connected on a pair of free throws to make it 31-24 before the Lady Tigers reeled off a 15-2 run over the next five minutes to take control. Brentwood Academy shot 1-for-5 in the span and coughed up four turnovers as Ensworth opened up a 50-30 lead to start the fourth.

Waggoner, a North Carolina State signee, finished 10-of-19 from the floor and 11-of-13 at the foul line. Ensworth took 18 more trips to the foul line than BA.

Schoenwald, a Belmont signee, added six rebounds and four assists in her final game.

The Knoxville Catholic boys edged Briarcrest 50-47 to win the boys title in DII-AA.

In DII-A, Trinity Christian topped King’s Academy 61-54 for the girls championship, while the Lausanne boys beat FACS 54-44.
