The 2020 WILLCO Awards Finalists were announced Friday with more than 70 Williamson County student-athletes honored.
Four finalists in 18 different categories were announced online by Williamson County Sports Conference Athletic Director Darrin Joines on social media. The sixth annual WILLCO Awards, the Williamson County Schools version of the ESPYs, will be a virtual event on June 16.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and cancellation of spring sports just as seasons were beginning this year, sports like baseball, softball, tennis and others won’t be included in the awards show. Only sports that were able to complete seasons are included, Joines said in an interview earlier this week.
“We wanted to do something to be able to still recognize those who completed their seasons and feel as normal as we can,” Joines said, adding that he hopes it can bring some closure to the unprecedented school year. “We hope it could be a consolation prize at the least for those who performed at such high levels during their seasons.”
The WILLCO Awards will have a virtual video premiere on Tuesday, June 16 at 7 p.m. and be hosted by Joines and 104.5 The Zone radio personality Tate Mathews.
