A Jack Sauder fourth-quarter field goal provided the difference and the Battle Ground Academy football team earned a 17-14 win at Lipscomb Academy in the regular season Division II-A Middle Region finale Friday in Nashville.
Sauder broke a 14-14 tie with the only score of the second half when he converted a 26-yard field goal with 10:03 to play. The two teams traded blows in the first quarter combining for four touchdowns.
The Mustangs struck first inside the first three minutes, but BGA scored on back-to-back plays with 7:25 to play in the frame.
First, Nick Semptimphelter fired a 52-yard touchdown pass to Xavier Shaw and then Antonio Stevens snagged an interception and returned it for a score and a 14-7 lead. Kyle McNamara hit Luther Richesson for a 44-yard strike with 4:36 to play in the first to tie the game.
Semptimphelter closed 16-of-25 for 273 yards with the one score and an interception. Briston Bennett anchored the Wildcats ground game with 84 yards, while Shaw hauled in the 52-yard touchdown as well as a 39-yarder.
Bennett closed with seven tackles as well, while Iman Lohrasbi added four and-a-half tackles and a sack.
BGA, which improved to 7-3 and finished third in the region with a 2-2 mark, will open the 2019 playoffs at home next week against Cordova’s First Assembly Christian School (5-5).
