Despite the rugged weather conditions and a shaky start, the Brentwood Academy football team recovered to pick up a Division II-AAA East & Middle Region win against rival Ensworth Friday.
The Eagles, who were coming out of an idle week after back-to-back losses at Knoxville Catholic and at Montgomery Bell Academy, gave up two touchdowns in the first nine minutes against the Tigers, but scored the final 17 points.
Brentwood Academy handed off to Jordan James 42 times and the sophomore delivered with 238 yards rushing. Devyn Curtis added two second-half interceptions and a touchdown grab as BA topped Ensworth for the fifth consecutive time.
Tigers quarterback Gerard Bullock scored on an 8-yard run just over two minutes into the rivalry showdown and William Wright dashed 96 yards for a punt return touchdown at the 3-minute mark of the opening frame.
Brentwood Academy’s Paxton Perry, who connected on three field goals and his three PATs in the tough conditions, hit a 40-yarder between the two opening Tiger scores in the first, while Wade Williams found Aaron Lovins for a 31-yard strike in the final seconds of the frame.
In the second, Bullock tossed a 34-yard TD to Keshawn Lawrence and Perry connected from 46 yards as time expired to go into the half. Ensworth held a 20-13 advantage.
It was all BA in the second half.
James found the end zone early in the third on a 13-yard run and Williams hit Curtis for an 18-yard score on the next Eagles possession for a 27-20 lead. Perry tacked on a 19-yard field goal with 5:11 to play in the fourth.
James, the standout sophomore, had eight carries on the 11-play, 77-yard scoring drive over the first four minutes, 30 seconds of the third. Curtis intercepted Bullock on the next Tiger drive and then snagged that 18-yarder to put BA in front for good.
The Eagles racked up 311 yards on the ground behind James and out-gained Ensworth 446-228.
Williams closed 11-of-21 for 135 yards with the pair of TDs. He added 57 yards on the ground on 10 carries.
After allowing 20 points in the first half, the BA defense gave up just four first downs in the second half. Curtis closed with nine tackles and the two picks with his second coming inside the final four minutes.
The Eagles improved to 6-3 overall and 2-2 in region play heading into next week’s contest against Baylor at home. Ensworth ends the regular season at top-ranked McCallie next week.
