In an all-Williamson County showdown at Ravenwood, the Raptors struck fast and early to shutout visiting Franklin in a Region 6-6A battle.
Senior Tony Rice rushed for 134 yards and three touchdowns on just 11 carries to lead Ravenwood, which improved to 3-0 and 2-0 in region play with the Week 3 victory.
“Tony had a huge night for us,” Raptors coach Matt Daniels said. “He’s been one of those kids that have worked so hard the last couple years to be a good running back and I think it’s culminating now as a senior.
“I’m just proud of these guys.”
After quarterback Brian Garcia ignited the offense with another big play out of the gate and a 1-yard touchdown plunge, Rice tacked on two more rushing TDs in the opening frame, including a 69-yard rumble with 1:46 left in the first for a 21-0 lead.
The Ravenwood defense kept the Franklin offense silenced throughout. Junior Colson, who had a team-best eight tackles, was one of three Raptors defenders with a sack. Damon Owens made two stops and had an interception to go with his quarterback drop and Bryan Rice added five tackles with two for loss.
Franklin coach Donnie Webb and company were quick to make some adjustments after the first to slow the potent Raptor attack.
“Once we withstood the flurry, I thought we played pretty well,” Webb said. “They started the game fast and we just couldn't get them slowed down in the first quarter. Once we settled down, I thought we played some pretty good football.”
The Rebels best scoring chance came in the third when they pieced together a 12-play drive only to come up empty. Ravenwood out-gained Franklin 398-273.
“They play really good disciplined football,” Daniels said. “Coach Webb has earned that title, Dr. Defense for a reason. It’s tough for us and I think the challenge for us will be to find a way to stay focused. When we get up early like that, our challenge is always how we can kind of keep the foot on the gas.”
Senior Guy Lipscomb threw for 125 yards and also rushed for 95 more to lead Franklin. John Kirkpatrick (6 tackles, sack) and Jett Wilson (2 tackles, INT) highlighted the Rebels defense.
Franklin heads into a Week 4 home game against unbeaten Class 5A Summit next week. Ravenwood will stay at home to face Arkansas’ Pulaski Academy before Week 5’s annual Battle of the Woods showdown with Brentwood.
