BRENTWOOD – The effort was there for the Ravenwood football team, but turnovers and the constant pressure from the No. 1 high school football team in country – IMG Academy – prevailed Friday night with a national audience watching on ESPNU.

The Ascenders improved to 3-0 with a 45-14 victory in Brentwood.

Ravenwood quarterback Trevor Andrews started the contest at wide receiver after five weeks under center, but quickly had to move back to QB after Jacob Stewart was injured.

Andrews lost control of the ball on a pump fake during his first drive and Nick James returned it for an IMG Academy touchdown and a 17-0 lead to start the second quarter.

Andrews recovered quickly and led the Raptors on a 66-yard scoring drive capped by Andrews’ 12-yard touchdown pass to Brenden Dickinson with 7:51 left in the second frame.

After a strong defensive stand, Ravenwood was able to work deep into IMG Academy territory, but a fourth down gamble at the 4-yard line of the Ascenders was turned back with under a minute to play in the half.

After a Terrell Foster 12-yard touchdown for IMG Academy, Andrews led another scoring drive for the Raptors. He hit Ross Johnston for a 9-yard strike with 3:29 to play in the third to make it 24-14.

The Ascenders did the rest, including 52- and 6-yard touchdown runs from Georgia commit Lovasea Carroll.

IMG Academy closed with 452 yards of offense and dominated the run game by limiting Ravenwood to just 17 yards rushing and forcing five total turnovers.

The loss was the third in a row for the Raptors – the longest since the 2012 season. Ravenwood has committed 13 turnovers in that span, which includes a 37-29 setback against defending Arkansas state champion Pulaski Academy and last week’s 28-21 overtime setback against Region 6-6A rival Brentwood.

Andrews finished with 200 yards passing on 19-of-37 attempts. Dickinson collected eight catches for 82 yards and his TD, while Johnston had five grabs for 52 yards and a touchdown.

Ravenwood’s Junior Colson paced the defense with eight tackles and got two hits on future Michigan teammate JJ McCarthy.

McCarthy guided the Ascenders offense with 193 yards passing. His 27-yard strike to Stacy Gage opened the scoring midway through the first.

Kaytron Allen led IMG Academy’s rushing attack with 71 yards on 10 carries to go with a fourth-quarter touchdown.

Ravenwood, which sits at 3-3 overall, steps back into Region 6-6A play next week with a home game against struggling Dickson County.
