Football: Summit continues unbeaten start; Page starts fast at Giles County

The Summit football team continued its winning ways Friday to push the Spartans’ program-best start to 6-0.

Summit overcame a slow start to breeze past visiting Clarksville Northwest 30-3 in Spring Hill.

Destin Wade threw for two touchdowns and ran in another to lead the Spartans, who are ranked No. 5 in the latest Associated Press Class 5A statewide poll.

Wade completed 9-of-12 passes for 195 yards and touchdowns strikes of a7 to Andrew Pierce and 57 yards to Grayson Hill. He ran in a 1-yard TD in the third.

Northwest opened the scoring in the first with a 39-yard field goal, but was silenced the rest of the way getting out-gained 341-208 in the contest. Wade’s scoring pass to Pierce with 9:13 to play in the first triggered the Summit offense.

Pierce finished with three catches for 88 yards.

The strike to Hill followed at the 3:46 mark of the second for a 14-3 lead after Elijah Mooney’s second PAT.

Summit’s defense added a safety and Konata Werts came away with an interception returned for a touchdown to end the contest.

The Spartans host Page in Week 7 in a Region 5-5A showdown.

The Patriots went on the road and used a fast start to get some separation from Giles County and hang on for a non-conference win in Week 6.

Cade Walker hit Miles Bonn for a pair of touchdowns and found Hayes Barnett for another in the explosive first half for Page. Walker and Bonn connected on a 59-yard strike on the second play of the game for the Patriots and less than four minutes later it was Barnett on a the receiving end of an 81-yarder.

Giles County struck on a Luke Williams 21-yard run to cap an eight-play, 80-yard drive for the home team near the end of the first quarter.

Chase Tidmore split the uprights with a 31-yard field goal just over two minutes into the second for a 17-7 Page lead. Giles County responded with an 80-yard touchdown run to narrow the gap to a 17-14 with 5:28 remaining in the half.

Walker found Bonn for their second TD on a 37-yard pass with 3:51 to play in the half. 

Bubba Johnson scored the only points of the second half with a 3-yard touchdown run with 4:57 to play in the fourth to cap a 10-play, 93-yard Page drive.

Walker finished 7-of-14 for 186 yards with the three TDs. Johnson rushed for 173 yards on the night on 15 carries with the one score. He added a 19-yard reception.

Max VanLandingham made nine tackles and had a sack to lead the Patriots defense. Nolan Henry was in on 12 tackles.

The Patriots won last season’s tilt with Summit 31-7.
