Annual Cowboy Bowl is set to kick off Saturday

The Franklin Cowboys youth football and cheerleading organization on Saturday will begin its 50th season with the annual Cowboy Bowl at Jim Warren Park getting underway at 9 a.m.

The Cowboys are founding members of the Tennessee Youth Football League, a group that has grown to 16-plus communities stretching across Davidson, Rutherford, Williamson and Wilson counties. Each community group provides an opportunity for youngsters 4-14 to learn proper techniques, teamwork and controlled competition in football and cheerleading.

Originally the Williamson County Cowboys, the program was started by the Franklin Optimist Club in 1970 as an offshoot of the still popular Franklin Baseball Club. The massive growth of Williamson County led to Franklin remaining the mothership while other communities, including a very successful Brentwood program, along with Spring Hill and Nolensville, relieved the pressure of size by opening their own groups.

“This could not happen without the commitment of two great groups,” said Franklin Community President Jose Diaz. “First, the volunteers who spend countless hours coaching, teaching and mentoring our players and cheerleaders. And this absolutely could not happen without the assistance of the city of Franklin and the Franklin Parks Department that leases and maintains our fields.”

The work of the Franklin Parks Department paid off last year when the Cowboys’ Field One was honored as field of the year by the Sports Turf Management Association.

Saturday’s Cowboy Bowl will keep both fields busy with a combination of half games or full contests while giving players a chance to get acclimated to the regimen of game day.

The bowl also serves as the main fundraiser of the year, with an admission of $5 to cover both fields all day.
