High school football: Teams focus on final tune-ups before season opens next week

The final Friday night before the start of the regular season for high school football teams is typically filled with jamborees, a final dress rehearsal with shortened contests that provide a chance to work out some kinks.

A year ago, schools in Williamson and Rutherford counties experimented with a two-night super jamboree. While the event was a success, it was difficult to arrange pairings that would not be repeated in the regular season.

This year, Page will host a jamboree on Friday night featuring Fairview playing Hixson from the Chattanooga area at 6 p.m. and Page taking on Nolensville at 7.

Christ Presbyterian Academy, the defending Division II, Class AA state champs, will travel all the way to Macon County High School in Lafayette to participate in jamboree action. The Lions’ junior varsity squad will face RePublic High’s varsity at 8 p.m. before host Macon County play CPA’s varsity at 8:30.

Meanwhile, most county teams opted to do their own thing, scheduling standard scrimmages as final tune-ups.

Brentwood will head north to Pope John Paul II for a 5 p.m. scrimmage before opening the season against MBA at home the following week. Independence will scrimmage with Father Ryan at 6 p.m. while defending Region 6-6A champion Ravenwood will go to Siegel for a controlled scrimmage starting at 7 p.m.

The last preseason contest may draw the most interest, as Centennial will host county rival Summit for a 5:30 p.m. scrimmage. Both will need the work since they open the season next week with neighborhood rivalries. The Cougars will go to Ravenwood to open the Region 6-6A season while the Spartans will host rival Independence.

Brentwood Academy and Grace Christian Academy will take Friday night off.  Brentwood Academy will open the season on the road at Florence, Alabama, where former Ravenwood state title coach Will Hester is in charge, while the Lions will travel to Zion Christian.

Franklin and BGA will end their preseason action early. The Rebels will travel to Stewarts Creek for a final scrimmage today, while the Wildcats will host a scrimmage against Nashville Christian at 7 tonight.
