MURFREESBORO – Carrying an unbeaten record, playing for the first time in 10 days and simply opening up state tournament play were some of the pressures the Brentwood Lady Bruins soccer team faced Wednesday.
The Brentwood girls eventually settled in and found their rhythm to advance to the Class AAA State Soccer semifinals with a 3-0 shutout of Siegel at the Richard Siegel Soccer Complex.
Junior Maison Wells scored two goals and classmate Hayley Howard tallied another for the Lady Bruins.
“This whole season we have been working to get to this stage and I think we have been progressing both as a team and individually,” said Wells, who scored the first goal of the match in the 47th when Morgan Greene rocketed a ball in front of the goal for the one-touch tally. “I think we just had to settle down and once we got into the game, it kind of flowed for us.”
Howard scored on a free kick from 20 yards out in the 58th for a 2-0 lead. The junior led the team with five shots, including three on goal. Wells scored the final tally in the 75th on a rebound.
Wells, Greene, Elle Scott and Olivia Olmstead all produced three shots. he Laid Bruins controlled the tempo right from the start, but couldn't convert a first-half goal.
Brentwood coach Kersta Mello anticipated a bit of a soft start thanks to the various hurdles for beginning state play a week later. The entire state tournament was postponed from last week due to weather.
“We definitely played a little more our style of soccer in the second half,” said Mello, whose team fell in penalty kicks in the first round last season, but improved to 15-0 with the win Wednesday. “We’ll take finishing strong everyday.
“I think we will get re-focused and be ready to come back tomorrow for more.”
Brentwood will take on Maryville (18-3-3), which edged Science Hill 3-2 in the first round Wednesday. Ravenwood and Houston will meet in the other semifinal. Both matches will be played at 1:30 p.m. at the Richard Siegel Soccer Complex.
“We worked hard to make this our year,” Wells said. “We have to do this for our seniors and keep this going.”

Brentwood senior keeper Kate Devine earned the win and stopped two shots. The Lady Bruins out-shot the Lady Stars 21-4, but gave up one breakaway look in the 44th.
Devine stepped up and pressured Siegel’s Emily Sanchez on the breakaway as Sanchez sent a right-footed shot wide right. Scott came back with a quick look on goal for the Lady Bruins and Wells followed with the nifty ball from Greene a minute later.
“I don’t know if it was our nerves of just jitters and excitement, but you can see how we took a while to settle down,” Mello said. “Hopefully we see our style of soccer come through a little sooner to build on tomorrow.”
