The Centennial wrestling team matched the school's highest finish at the TSSAA State Dual Wrestling championships last year by finishing fourth. The Cougars mission to better that placing fell short Saturday at the Williamson County Ag Expo Center despite advancing to the Class AAA semifinals.
Centennial dropped back-to-back duals against Wilson Central and Blackman.
The Independence grapplers also fell in consolation after a narrow win over Maryville early in the day Saturday to go 1-2 at the state tournament for a second consecutive season. In Division II, Brentwood Academy and Battle Ground Academy fell in consolation as well.
Samari Suddeath remembers his first season wrestling with the Centennial Cougars.
In the semifinals, Centennial had a short-lived lead early against Wilson Central behind a forfeit and a Samari Suddeath 5-0 decision win in the 195-pound division. The senior went 4-0 in the state tournament for the Cougars, but his minor decision proved to be the only victory against a loaded Wilson Central squad.

The Blaze won eight straight matches before forfeiting out to advance. Blackman sealed the win with four consecutive pins at 120, 126, 132 and 138.

Junior 152-pounder Maverick Marmol gave Indy a 35-32 edge with pin early in the second round against Gavin Marsh. Clinging to the three-point lead entering the final match, sophomore Cannon Roberts claimed a 4-2 decision over Maryville’s Wes Day to seal the victory.
The Eagles fell to Oakland in their second match of the day. Oakland had dropped 33-30 quarterfinal against Centennial Friday.
The Patriots advanced thanks to three consecutive pins in the final matches at 145, 152 and 160. Junior Tanner Willett (138) had given Indy a 26-21 edge with a 16-8 major decision victory prior to the string of Oakland pins.
