State Wrestling: Fairview finishes runner-up, Nolensville takes fourth

The Fairview faithful watched the Yellow Jacket wrestling team finish runner-up at the TSSAA Class A-AA State Dual Wrestling Championships Saturday, Feb. 8, 2020 at the Williamson County Ag Expo Center in Franklin.

The Fairview wrestling team finished second overall in the TSSAA Class A-AA Dual Wrestling Championships over the weekend in Franklin.

After advancing to the school’s first final with wins over Greeneville and Williamson County foe Nolensville Friday, the Yellow Jackets ran into defending champion Pigeon Forge on Saturday at the Williamson County Ag Expo Center.

The Tigers claimed a second consecutive title and fifth overall with a 43-26 victory in the championship dual. Nolensville, last year’s state runner-up, advanced to the third-place dual before falling to Hixson 40-32 to settle for fourth.

Fairview opened with a quick pin by 170-pounder Luke Maxwell, a senior, early in the second round to kick off the championship, but Pigeon Forge won three of the next four matches to build a 16-9 lead. Fairview freshman Joshua Helm battled to a 10-8 decision at 106 to narrow the gap to 16-12 and the Tigers responded with a decision at 113 and pin at 120 to take a 25-12 lead.

Sophomore Blake Mitchell (126) and senior Riley Bennett (138) posted wins for Fairview in the next three matches. Bennett’s first round pin of Colin Gray got the Yellow Jackets within 31-21, but Pigeon Forge sealed the title with back-to-back pins at 145 and 152.

The Tigers have wrestled for in the championship dual in nine of the last 10 years with titles in 2014, 2015, 2017, 2019 and this year. Fairview bested its third place finish in 2018, when the Yellow Jackets advanced to the state tournament for the first time.  

Nolensville dispatched Greenbriar 46-28 in an elimination round earlier Saturday to advance to the third place match.

Senior Gavin Channell posted a 5-4 decision at 152 against Kaleb Mayes to give Nolensville a 29-28 lead with three matches remaining.

Hixson, which took fourth last year, responded with back-to-back pins at 160 and 170 to seal the win and take third.

Freshman Bailey Black posted a couple pins wrestling at 195 against Hixson and 220 against Greenbriar. Seniors Channell, and Jacob Vogelpohl (138) along with juniors Riley Lippincott (126) and Sean Allen (145) as well as freshman Cole Dorsett (106) all posted two wins for the Knights on the day.
