The Ravenwood boys basketball team opened the 2012-2013 season in victorious fashion, defeating McClain Christian Academy 77-23 Tuesday night.
Raptors coach Patrick Whitlock was excited for the official start of the season.
“This particular group has put a whole lot into this season,” he said. “The majority of these kids played AAU together. They’re a group of kids that I can’t keep out of the gym. So for us to actually be able to suit up and play against somebody that’s not ourselves is obviously exciting.”
Ravenwood (1-0) controlled the contest early, jumping to a 49-9 lead in the first half while 14 different Raptors contributed to the score sheet by the end of the night. Joey Barnes, a 6-foot-8 senior, led the team with 11 points before the starters were pulled with three minutes remaining in the second quarter.
Knowing the contest was a mismatch headed in, Whitlock said he found out a lot about his team’s maturity level Tuesday night.
“While I think we can play a lot better, I think we came out and played smart and sound and basically did what we had to do. It’s not a great situation for us, and probably not for (MCA) either, but we got through it.”
Junior Matthew Hailey had nine first-half points while sophomore Nick Gleason scored nine in the second half.
The Lady Raptors lost their opener, falling to Lipscomb Academy 45-41.
Trailing 23-8 at halftime, Ravenwood (0-1) got as close as 30-25 six minutes into third quarter on the strength of five 3-point baskets.
Lipscomb pulled away on a 13-3 run over the next eight minutes before Ravenwood furiously closed the gap.
Colyn Springer was the Lady Raptors’ leading scorer with 12 points, coming on four 3-pointers, while Emily Allen added 10.
