The Brentwood boys basketball team bettered their record to 8-1 Tuesday night, defeating Smyrna 63-47.
Brentwood led for the majority of the night while Smyrna kept the margin to five points at the most until a fourth-quarter surge pulled the Bruins to a double-digit victory.
Cory Smith brought the Bulldogs to within 40-38 at the start of the final period before Brentwood turned up the intensity on defense. Implementing a full-court trap with senior Cody Shelton at the point, the Bruins outscored Smyrna 23-11 in the final eight minutes of play.
Shelton led Brentwood with a game-high 20 points, displaying the tools of a complete player. The 6-foot-5 senior has touch around the basket with both hands, quickness and length on defense to deflect passes, and range from beyond the 3-point line.
Junior Andy Schumpert played a big role in Brentwood’s victory as well. Leading 28-27 at through two quarters, Schumpert scored 12 of his 16 points in the second half.
Smyrna stalled Brentwood’s offense for a short period of time in the middle quarters with a 1-3-1 zone that trapped in the corners and kept Bruin shooters out of shooting range on the perimeter.
Smith led Smyrna with 12 points while Richard Mulligan added 10.
The Lady Bruins fell behind early to Smyrna before rallying for a 68-44 victory.
Tied 13-13 after the first quarter, Brentwood outscored the Bulldogs 20-7 in the second quarter as Paige Parker scored eight points in the quarter and Olivia Shealy added seven. Parker finished the contest with a game-high 24 points, sinking three 3-pointers, while Shealy added 19 and one from long range.
Brianne Alexander had 13 points for Smyrna.
Brentwood continues their schedule Friday night at Blackman High School in Murfreesboro.
