Schumpert shows no sign of injury agaisnt Rebels

Brentwood wing player Andy Schumpert showed little to no residue of injury Friday night in the Bruins’ 64-46 win over longtime rival Franklin. Schumpert, a 6-foot-3 junior, scored 25 points against the Rebels after missing Tuesday’s game against Centennial.

Bruin coach Dennis King said Schumpert could have played Tuesday, but the safe play was sitting him against the Cougars.

“Giving him that week off – we’ve insured that we’ll have him the rest of the year without a nagging injury,” the coach said.

Brentwood (19-2, 4-0) was relentless with a full court defense throughout second half, opening the fourth quarter on a 14-4 run.

The night’s opening two quarters were a back-and-forth battle featuring 11 lead changes.

Franklin (12-7, 2-2) took their last lead with three minutes remaining in the second quarter on a Garrison Mathews 3-pointer before Brentwood countered on a 7-0 run to close the half. Rebels coach Jay Johnson said that two-minute stretch proved costly.

“We missed a couple of layups and lost our man on defense,” he said. “Just little things that we’ve been battling for two years now and until we get those (fixed) and buy into that, we’re going to continue to be inconsistent.”

Turnovers hurt Franklin as well, committing 22 according to the Franklin staff.

The Rebels hung close with the District 11-AAA leading Bruins in the first half thanks to solid post play from Ben Hagaman. A transfer from Brentwood, Hagaman led the team with 21 points – nine in the first quarter.

“I’ve got to give props to Ben Hagaman,” said King. “He had a lot of pressure on him tonight, coming in with all the fans. He took care of business.”

Brentwood continues their district schedule Tuesday night against Ravenwood while Franklin hosts Independence.
