County well represented at wrestling state finals

Five wrestlers from four Williamson County schools advanced past the semifinal rounds Friday night and into the finals at the TSSAA Individual State Wrestling Tournament.

Franklin’s Alex Bennett (152) and the Ravenwood duo of Jacob Freeman (145) and Tanner Reynolds (160) will compete for Division I titles while Battle Ground Academy’s Pierce Olson (138) and Brentwood Academy’s Amos Mason (220) will go for Division II championships.

For Freeman, a senior, it is his fourth state tournament and his first shot at a state championship. Freeman finished third in both his freshman and sophomore years. Heading into the final match of his career has brought mixed emotions.

“I’m angry, I’m sad, I’m excited, frustrated,” Freeman said. “Angry because I haven’t gotten a title yet and I have one more guy in the way. I’m sad because (my career) is almost over. One more match and it’s all over.”

Freeman will battle Pigeon Forge’s Nate Croley for the championship. He and Croley will go into the match more than opponents.

“Me and (Croley) have been talking,” he said. “I’ve only known him for a couple of days. Great guy, great wrestler, obviously to beat the No. 1 seed up there for the second time this year.”

For BA’s Mason, performing on the big stage is something he has done before. Mason is a two-time defending state champion and is focused on getting No. 3.

“Take care of business and can’t let anything get away from me,” Mason said. “That’s what my coaches have been telling me the whole time, take care of business and get on them.”

Winning three-straight state championships is something a Brentwood Academy Eagle has never done, and Mason is aware of that.

“(Two-straight championships) is nice, but three would be even better,” he said. “I’d be the first one in my school to do that. It’d mean a lot.”

The final round of the tournament begins at 5:00pm Saturday at the Williamson County Agricultural Exposition Center. A Parade of Champions precedes the matches at 4:30 p.m. and consolation brackets for both boys and girls begin at 10:00 a.m.
