Indy bats ready for Summit rivalry

In the only scheduled game of the year between the schools separated by six miles of back roads, Independence’s softball team defeated Summit’s 9-2 Monday afternoon in Spring Hill.

Indy bats were awake and ready for their nearby rival as the Lady Eagles slapped 10 hits and took a 9-0 advantage before Summit got two runs across in the bottom of the sixth.

Leadoff hitter Dallas Richards lived up to her position, leading the way with a double, a triple, and three runs scored for Independence.

The Lady Eagles were consistent at the plate, scoring runs in five of six frames.

Richards started the game being hit by a 2-1 pitch. After subsequently stealing second base and advancing to third on a ground out, she would score the first run of the game on a J.T. Twaddle ground out to the pitcher.

Indy scored three in the second as Bay-Lee Lampley opened with a double to center field and scored three batters later on a Lexi Aguilar single. Aguilar and Danielle Kowalkowski were driven home one batter later as Shae Herrick ripped a line drive to left.

Twaddle opened the third with a double to left-center before stealing third and being driven in on a fly out to center.

The Lady Eagles were quiet in the fourth before scoring two more in the fifth as Richards doubled and scored on a passed ball and Miranda Charo reached home on a Victoria Hope single to left.

Two more came across for Indy in the sixth – first with Aguilar scoring on a one-out triple by Richards, followed by Richards being driven in on a Mattie Stark single.

Taylor Johnson was strong from the pitching rubber for Indy, striking out four Summit batters and allowing only one hit before the Lady Spartans put together a rally in the sixth.

Independence continues their season with a district games against Brentwood April 2 while Summit travels to Page the same day.
