Raptors knock off No. 1 Beech in Franklin Sonic prelim

Ravenwood used timely hitting and solid pitching to defeat defending event champion and current No. 1 ranked Beech 2-1 on the way to posting a 2-0 record in the preliminary rounds of the Franklin Sonic Invitational softball tournament at Fly Park on Friday.

The Raptors set the tone early, winning their first game 4-3 over Wilson Central in extra innings. Ravenwood faced a two out, bases loaded situation in the bottom of the crucial frame, with pitcher Raygan Greer behind 3-0 before striking out the final batter of the contest.

Host Franklin also posted a 2-0 record, beating White House 7-3 in the first contest and then scoring twice in the bottom of the last inning to shock Lipscomb 2-1.

Arlington, Dickson County, Ezell-Harding and Walker Valley also finished the warm-up rounds with perfect records heading into Saturday’s tournament brackets.

The event boasts 24 teams from across the state and packed the Williamson County Parks and Recreation facility in East Franklin. At one point, traffic entering the facility backed up from the entrance to complex to Highway 96 East.

Saturday’s double-elimination tournament begins at 9 a.m. with contests scheduled every 90 minutes. Championship games in both the Gold and Silver Divisions are tentatively scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Saturday evening.
