Postseason baseball begins with district tournaments

High School baseball enters the second season as area teams fight for survival and postseason advancement, beginning with district tournaments.

First in action was Fairview, being forced into District 12-AA’s play-in game against East Hickman Wednesday night. The winner becomes the tournament’s No. 8 seed and will face top-ranked Spring Hill.

The Yellow Jackets beat East Hickman in both their meetings this year by a combined score of 20-13. Fairview totaled just one other win in district play this year.

The youthful Summit Spartans, still one year away from their first senior class, earned a No. 3 seed in the tournament and will open against No. 6 Lewis County. They split the season series, Lewis County winning the opener 4-3 and the Spartans following with an 8-1 victory.

Page looked to be in line for a top seed two weeks ago before dropping four-straight district games to Spring Hill and Marshall County – now the two highest seeded teams. The Patriots now must face Giles County, a team they split with early in the regular season.

Marshall County, the two seed, will host Hickman County in the opening round of the double-elimination tournament that runs through May 7.

Weather could prove to be an issue for Friday’s games. If so, teams are instructed to reschedule for Saturday morning.

Unlike 12-AA, District 11-AAA’s tournament will take place at one central location – Brentwood High School.

No. 3 Centennial opens the tournament Friday afternoon against No. 6 Hillsboro. The Cougars beat the Burros by a combined score of 24-2 in mid-April.

Friday’s night session features No. 4 Ravenwood against No. 5 Independence. Both teams finished their district schedule with matching 7-7 records with Ravenwood holding the tiebreaker thanks to their two wins over the Eagles.

No. 1 Brentwood and No. 2 Franklin both get byes to Saturday’s second round of the double-elimination tournament.
