Rivalry games set up for soccer's district semifinals

District 11-AAA’s soccer quarterfinal action May 6 set up rivalry matches in Wednesday’s semifinal as No. 3 Brentwood advances to play No. 2 Ravenwood while No. 5 Centennial moves on to face No. 1 Franklin.
Brentwood beat No. 6 Hillsboro 1-0 on their home field in a contest that was much closer than the Bruins wanted.
The Burros, winless in district games this season, had two good scoring chances in the match’s opening minutes – both being saved by Brentwood goalkeeper Matt Churitch.
Brentwood became more aggressive on the offensive end beginning with the last five minutes of the first half, but appeared to become frustrated by continual close misses on goal and the officiating.
Blake Chidester finally got the Bruins on the scoreboard 16 minutes into the second half as he slid a shot underneath the Burros goalie.
Centennial got a late goal by Josh Keller to lift them over Independence 2-1.
The game-winner came moments after Indy’s Kurt Pierce tied the match with a header.
Keller had both Cougar goals on the night while Yevgheny Ogorodnik had an assist.
The second round of the Battle of the Woods takes place Wednesday at 5 p.m. Brentwood and Ravenwood tied in their previous meeting – a 1-1 decision on April 3.
Franklin beat Centennial 1-0 on April 26 in the year’s first Battle of Franklin. Round 2 on Wednesday kicks off at 7 p.m.
Both semifinal games will take place at Independence High School.
