Franklin explodes to softball winners' bracket final
By Joe Williams, For the Williamson Herald
Rain stopped Franklin’s softball team Monday night with the Lady Rebels up 3-2 over second seed Independence.
Unfortunately for the Lady Eagles, there was no rain on Tuesday.
Franklin exploded for seven more runs, keyed by a Libby Sugg grand slam in the delayed third inning and another RBI double in the fifth to beat Indy 10-3. Katie Moseley handcuffed Independence for most of the afternoon after giving two runs in the rain Monday night, scattering four hits and striking out two of the last three batters she faced.
The win puts Franklin into the winners’ bracket final against Ravenwood Wednesday afternoon at 5 p.m. at Crockett Park in Brentwood. The winner of that game is assured of a spot in the Region 6-AAA tournament next week.
Ravenwood gained their spot by stopping Centennial 5-0 in the other rain delayed finish. The Lady Cougars had a couple of chances to close an early 2-0 deficit, but could not push over the needed runs.
Independence roared back in the losers’ bracket, spotting Brentwood a 1-0 lead before scoring nine unanswered runs. The loss closes the season for Brentwood, while Indy faces Centennial in the losers’ bracket Wednesday at 5 p.m.
The Lady Cougars handed Hillsboro a 12-2 defeat in the Lady Burros’ last game in District 11-AAA. Hillsboro moves to District 12-AAA next season.
Like Independence, Centennial spotted Hillsboro a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning before answering with six runs in the bottom of the inning. The Lady Cougars added two in the fourth and four in the fifth to end the contest.
On the mound, sophomore Kendal Carder gave up a double to the leadoff batter in the second before retiring 12 straight.
The loser of the Independence-Centennial game will be eliminated, while the winner will face the loser of the Franklin-Ravenwood game at 6:30 to determine the last spot in the finals, set for Thursday at 5 p.m.
