Comeback-Cougars do it again

It’s never over until it’s actually over. Just ask the Centennial Cougars.

Trailing 4-0 to Ravenwood midway through the sixth inning in the District 11-AAA baseball final, the Cougars rallied to beat the Raptors 5-4 in extra innings Thursday night. The win forces a second game to the district final on Friday with a spot in the Region 6-AAA tournament on the line.

Ravenwood pitcher Luke Yates had kept Centennial off balance through the first five innings, striking out nine and walking one batter before giving up his first hit – a one-out single by Bailey Wisniowski in the bottom of the sixth. That led to six straight Cougars getting on base and Centennial tying the game 4-4.

“That’s a little hard to describe right there,” coach Rob Baughman said of the game. “That kid pitched a heck of a game for Ravenwood. We just hung around, and hung around, and hung around and got four to tie it up.”

Wisniowski scored the Cougars’ first run on a single by Cody Skrabak. Kyle Brennan scored one batter later thanks to an error at shortstop followed by Skrabak being driven in by a double to the right-center field gap by Deon Sanders.

Sanders scored the equalizing run on another shot to the gap by Cole Evans.

Relief pitchers for both squads, Tyler Bozeman for Centennial and Davis Elliott, held their opponents scoreless through regulation before the Cougars loaded the bases in the eighth. Brennan scored the game-winning run on a passed ball.

Ravenwood took a 3-0 advantage in the third inning, two crossing the plate via a Cole Evans single and the third on a two-out single by Bryce Denton.

The Raptors added a run in the fifth when Ryan Pope scored on a Denton fly out to center.

Centennial’s win was their second of the day, coming back from a 3-0 deficit to beat Brentwood 4-3 in the losers’ bracket final.

Baughman gave his players all the credit for the day’s victories.

“The kids are the ones who are doing this,” he said. “The kids don’t want to lose.”

Ravenwood and Centennial will meet Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Cheek Park for the 11-AAA tournament title.
