Ravenwood wins fifth straight regional softball title

The Ravenwood Lady Raptors captured their fifth straight Region 6-AAA softball title Wednesday, beating Overton 11-0 in five innings.

“We played strong on offense and defense. The girls played together and that is what wins ballgames,” said first year head coach Cj Pangallo.

The defense didn’t have too much to do with the exception of the pitcher and catcher. Junior Raygan Greer was nearly unhittable on the mound, facing only 17 batters in five innings, giving up two singles while striking out 10 - seven of those swinging.

“She has worked so hard on her fundamentals,” said Pangallo, “and now it’s paying off for her.”

Offensively, nearly every Lady Raptor starter got into the mix. Lauren DuPont led off the game with a single and moved to second on smart base running after an Overton error. Before the first inning, DuPont, Lauren Myers and Madison Zoeller crossed the plate to give Ravenwood a 3-0 lead.

Ravenwood notched another run in the top of the second when Sarah Green was hit by a pitch, then raced home on a fielder’s choice and two more Lady Bobcat throwing errors two batters later. Haley Barnette homered to open the third and DuPont showed her blazing speed in the fourth, slapping a ball to the right field fence then motoring the 240-feet back to home plate before the ball got back to the infield for an inside-the-park home run. Emily Johnson’s single put her in front of DuPont as the Lady Raptors got two on the play to take a 7-0 lead.

The Williamson County bats really came alive in the top of the fifth, prompted by Zoeller’s leadoff double. Kendal Diehl followed with a single, was advanced by a Susan Huddleston single and scored on Demi Patonis’ double. An error moved Patonis to third and another to home, finishing Ravenwood’s scoring.

Overton got a two-out single in the bottom of the fifth, but Greer struck out the final Lady Bobcat batter swinging.

Ravenwood will host Clarksville Friday in a sectional contest that sends the winner to the BlueCross Spring Fling in Murfreesboro next week.
