BA's Barnett invited to prestigious Nike camp

Brentwood Academy’s Derek Barnett was one of four high school football players from Tennessee invited to The Opening, an invitation-only football camp held by Nike in Beaverton, Ore. June 30 through July 3.

“Just got invited to The Opening!!,” Barnett tweeted on June 4. “Can’t wait to compete with the best and get coached by the best in Oregon.”

A 6-foot-3, 265-pound defensive end, Barnett was a Division II-AA Mr. Football winner in 2012. Rivals.com currently ranks him as a four-star prospect, the eighth-best prospect in Tennessee, and No. 16 at his position.

He currently has 16 offers from colleges – eight coming from schools in the Southeastern Conference.

“For the kids, it’s a neat experience to see some of the higher-level recruits in the country and compare,” Brentwood Academy coach Cody White said.

The Opening invites 150 of the nation’s top prospects to take part in combine-like drills and a 7-on-7 like competition with teams being announced June 19.

BA is no stranger to the event as Jalen Ramsey made the trip to the Nike campus in 2012. While there he thrived in 1-on-1 drills against the best high school wide receiver talent in the country, catapulting him to a five-star ranking and a spot as a top 10 prospect in the country.

Barnett’s impact might not be as showcased at the camp due to lineman not working out in full pads, but White doesn’t believe his standout needs to worry about his stock rising or falling.

“Either one of those guys, whether it was Jalen or is Derek, I don’t know how much their stock needs to rise,” he said. “They’ve been offered by anywhere they want to go to. When you get to that level, these kids are really able to pick and choose where they want to go.”

Ramsey originally committed to the University of Southern California before ultimately changing his mind and picking Florida State on National Signing Day.

Barnett has yet to make a verbal commitment, although six experts at 247Sports predict he will sign with Ohio State. He was scheduled for an unofficial visit with the Buckeyes on June 18.

Other Tennessee prospects invited to the 2013 camp are Beech High School running back Jalen Hurd, Station Camp wide receiver Josh Malone, and White Station linebacker Petera Wilson.

Four players from the Volunteer State were invited along with Ramsey in 2012 – Memphis Central lineman Frank Herron, Whitehaven running back Mark Dodson, Memphis East lineman Christian Morris, and Clarksville Northeast athlete Jalen Reeves-Maybin. Each signed with major college football programs after their senior year – Herron with Louisiana State, Dodson with Ole Miss, Morris with UCLA, and Reeves-Maybin with Tennessee.
