North Carolina, Florida, Virginia dominate Cal Ripken opening day

FRANKLIN, TN—Seven teams finished with perfect 2-0 records on the first day the Cal Ripken 9U Southeastern Championships Thursday at Jim Warren Park, three from North Carolina and two each from Florida and Virginia.
Local favorite Grassland Smoke split their two opening day contests, knocking off Henry County in first game 12-7 before falling in the nightcap to Clay County (VA). Grassland plays Glen Allen (VA) at 4:30 p.m. and East Rowan (NC) at 7 p.m. to complete pool play.
The host Franklin Falcons looked to be on their way to an opening game victory, leading 11-7 going into the last inning against Martin (TN). But the West Tennessee team found their bats, scoring 6 runs in the top of the sixth and holding on to handFranklin 13-11 loss. The Falcons dropped the last game of the night to Atlantic Beach (FL).
Franklin will have to fight back today to have a chance to advance to the single elimination championship bracket tomorrow and Sunday, with games against Peachtree (VA) at 4:30 this afternoon and a 7 p.m. date with Matthews (NC).
The tournament, the latest coup by the Franklin Baseball Club and the City of Franklin Parks Department, has twenty teams competing for eight slots in the champion’s bracket. Play began at 9 a.m. this morning and runs continuously through the last game tonight at 7 p.m.
