Only four teams remain unbeaten in Ripken tourney

Only four teams remained undefeated after the morning session of the play in the Cal Ripken 9U Southeastern Championships at Jim Warren Park.

Clay County (FL), Peachtree (VA), West Raleigh (NC) and Laurinburg (NC) have been perfect in their first three games.  Each team has one more pool game before seeding for the championship bracket tomorrow and Sunday.  With all four in different divisions, the group has the inside track on winning the top seed for their division.  Only the first and second place teams from each five team division will advance.

West Raleigh appears to be the offense juggernaut of the event so far, outscoring opponents by a total of 63-10 in just three games.  Clay County is not far behind, tallying 49 runs while giving up only 14.

The hometown eyes will be focused on the evening session, as both the Franklin Falcons and the Grassland Smoke will play double headers.  The first game for each team is set for 4:30 p.m. with a 7 p.m. night cap.  After splitting two yesterday, Grassland needs a pair of wins to make the finals bracket.  For Franklin, after a heart breaking loss in the opening game, the trail is much steeper, with undefeated Peachtree and East Rowan as opponents.

Twenty teams are vying for the eight spots in the Championship Bracket at Jim Warren Park.  The event is open to the public.
