Grassland close, but miss finals in Cal Ripken tourney

The Grassland Smoke made a valiant last ditch effort to secure a spot in the finals bracket of the Cal Ripken Southeast Regional Championships, but could not overcome three first inning doubles that scored three runs for Glen Allen (VA), giving the visitors a 4-2 victory.

The loss dropped the Smoke out of contention, joining the Franklin Falcons in elimination.

Four of the eight teams in the single elimination bracket traveled to Franklin from Florida (Atlantic Beach, Okeeheelee, Clay County and Manatee), while three North Carolina teams (Laurinburg, East Rowan and West Raleigh) teams made the finals, along with Virginia’s Peachtree entry.

Laurinburg will meet Peachtree and Manatee faces Clay County at 10 a.m. this morning at Jim Warren Park to advance to the semi-finals on Sunday morning.  At 12:30 p.m. today, Atlantic Beach plays Okeeheelee and East Rowan takes on West Raleigh for the final two spots.  The winners will meet at 10 a.m. Sunday morning before the championship match-up that follows at 12:30 p.m.
