Independence senior long distance runner Lizzy Kroeger thought Monday morning’s senior class gathering was just another informational meeting.
And it was but the information was all about her.
Kroeger was introduced as a finalist for the Wendy’s High School Heisman Award to be presented in New York City in December. She is one of only six remaining female finalists from across the U.S.
“I wasn’t sure what to expect at the meeting,” she said surrounded by family, friends and a gaggle of media types. “But this is a really big deal.”
The National Merit Semi-Finalist knows how big the WHSH program is, as her sister Kathy won the award in 2008 while a senior at Independence. The Kroeger sisters remain the only two runners from Middle Tennessee to reach New York City in the program’s twenty-year history.
“I thought it would be nice to get close to her,” Kroeger said of her sister’s win in 2008. “She pushes me, making it more fun to run. Now I want to win it so I can have the same award as my sister.”
