Raptor grapplers open season in Top Ten

The Ravenwood Raptors wrestling team has opened the season as the ninth ranked team in the state, according to a state-wide panel of high school wrestling coaches.   But Coach Josh Peck isn’t that impressed.
“Rankings don’t really mean much; they are just a fun way of seeing what a bunch of coaches think will happen,” he said smiling earlier this week.  “What really happens matters way more.”
Peck can downplay the rankings, but they are a reflection of his program that currently has three wrestlers ranked in the state.  Robin Klingensmith, Taylor Warren and Rex Shotts all are threats at every meet.
Shotts finished third in the state last year at 220-pounds, while Warren was fifth in a very strong field at 152 pounds.
“Hopefully there will be more that make it into the rankings soon.”
Despite the rankings, Peck knows his team has a tough row to hoe in District 11-AAA.
“Since we became a part of Region 6, a Williamson County team has won the regional title every year. This is a strong area for wrestling.”
Cleveland, Father Ryan, Baylor, Wilson Central and Soddy Daisy are the top five, followed by McCallie, Bradley Central and Christian Brothers. Blackman and MBA are tied for tenth behind Ravenwood.
Wrestlers compete individually in one of fourteen different weight classifications, with results of the individual events gaining points towards a team total.
Williamson County hosts both the dual (team) and individual championships at the Williamson County Ag/Expo Center in late January and February.
Wrestling (Franklin), golf (Manchester) and football (Cookeville) are the only sports where the state championships are not held in Murfreesboro.
Ravenwood returns to action today at home in a dual match with fourth-ranked Wilson Central and tenth-ranked MBA.
In other action this afternoon, Brentwood hosts Hillwood, DCA and Lipscomb Academy, Centennial and Franklin go to Seigel along with Shelbyville.
Independence is at Antioch and Summit is at Hillsboro with Oakland.
