Brentwood Academy falls at John Paul II in a late game thriller, 58-56

Senior forward, Austin Hayes scored six points in the final 90 seconds of the game to give his JPII Knights the come from behind win against the Brentwood Academy Eagles 58-56.

Hayes knocked down two free throws to break the 56-56 tie with only six seconds remaining in the game and forced BA into a last second situation. The Eagles called on freshman guard Jeremiah Oatsvall, whose falling away 3-point attempt in the deep corner fell short as the buzzer sounded.

“We were trying to get (Oatsvall) a penetration move and they did a good job of keeping him out of the middle,” BA coach Hubie Smith said. “We had our other guys spotted up behind the three, but they did a good job of driving him to the corner and we didn’t get anything we wanted.”

Down the stretch Eagles guard Ed Wilks hit his fourth 3-pointer of the night to tie the game at 56 all with 40 seconds left in a game that didn’t foreshadow any late game drama at halftime.

BA lead 31-22 at halftime seeming to have complete control of the contest. A hot shooting start saw the Eagles hit five 3-pointers in the first quarter that jumped them out ahead of the Knights.

The Knights came out fired up in the third quarter lead by senior Ricky Lang and sophomore Ryan Hatten. Lang and Hatten combined for 15 third quarter points and put a string together of three consecutive “old fashion” 3-point plays at the rim to get the Knights back in it.

“We gave up nine layups in the third quarter,” Smith said. “We didn’t guard at all. That was as bad of a defensive quarter that I’ve ever seen one of my teams play.”

Many of those layups by JPII came off of Eagle turnovers that opened up the floor for the Knights.

“We’re so young and we play like it a lot of the time,” Smith said of the turnovers. “We panic and rush instead of just staying with the system. We don’t stay with the system very well.”

Senior KJ Blue lead the Eagles with 13 points but fouled out 1:33 to go in the game. Wilks’ four 3-pointers had him finish with 12 points and the freshman Oatsvall had 10 points.

Hatten for the Knights had a game high 16 points. Junior guard Dalton Smith finished with 11 and the star down the stretch for JPII, Hayes had 10 points.

Harvey leads Lady Eagles to 42-24 win

Sydni Harvey’s 14 points helped the Brentwood Academy girls cruise to victory over the John Paul II girls 42-24.

The Lady Eagles jumped out quick with 30 first half points, 12 of which came from Harvey. Bria Dial scored eight points as she controlled the paint. Anna Stephens added six points of her own.
