Commentary by William Carter: Lester the angel gives way to Clyde the gnome: The broken angel nestled in the palm of my right hand like some tiny, newborn child with its chin tucked in and its eyes opened Heavenward and its miniscule hands frozen forever together in innocent prayer. The angel was gray in most places but mossy green in others from years spent beneath the oak-leaf hydrangea that dominates one corner of our yard. A web of almost imperceptible cracks veined its body like some ancient alphabet and I peered closely, wondering if there was some message written by the elements there and wondering, too, what that message would be if only I knew how to read it.
