BRENTWOOD – For the second time in three days, the Summit High School baseball team picked up a win against District 12-4A regular season champion Ravenwood.
The Spartans posted a 10-8 win Tuesday to clinch the district tournament championship, overcoming six early runs from the hosts and top-seeded Raptors.
Summit coach Chad Kirby said his team made some uncharacteristic mistakes early, but scored in each inning and rode a “gritty” performance from pitcher Devin Thrain to stop Ravenwood once again. They defeated the Raptors 13-6 on Sunday to earn a shot at the title.
“We felt like we were going to be able to score some runs, but we just needed to play a little better defensively,” Kirby said. “We had some key hits and we were very aggressive on the bases – sometimes a little too aggressive – but I thought we did a good job and we just did a good job overall competing.”
Summit racked up 10 stolen bases in the contest, while Thrain pitched 5 2/3 innings on the start and allowed just one earned on four hits with nine strikeouts. However, the Spartans suffered from several early errors and trailed 6-2 entering the third.
“We didn’t help him out, but he just settled in,” Kirby said of Thrain. “You could just tell that Devin really wanted to win that game. That was one of the more gritty performances I’ve ever experienced to tell you the truth.”
The lefty senior pitched three scoreless innings to slow Ravenwood and the Spartans chipped away, eventually pulling even on a Logan Michalak two-out single that drove in Logan Franzoni in the top of the fifth. After Jace Kirby reached on a bunt, Brady Hendrix and Drew Plummer both scored on a Raptor error in the sixth to take an 8-6 lead. CJ Dugan drove in another run on a hard-hit grounder up the middle for the 9-6 advantage.
Kirby’s RBI-double in the seventh stretched the lead to 10-6 for the Spartans, before Blake Bevis smacked a two-out, two-run home run to pull the home team within two. Summit’s relief pitcher Hendrix allowed a single and hit Andrew Dudas after the homer, but closed the game with a three-strike K as the Spartans claimed the district tournament title.
“You set out in August and set some goals, and getting out of districts is one of those,” Kirby said of advancing to the regional. “Now we get to see who we get to face next on Monday.”
The Spartans will host the District 11-4A runner-up next week in the Region 6-4A tournament while Ravenwood will travel to the rival district’s champion.
Brentwood advanced to the 11-4A final with an 8-6 win over top-seeded Centennial in nine innings Tuesday across the interstate in Franklin. Henry Hanley blasted a two-out double in the top of the ninth to plate the go-ahead runs.
Franklin dispatched Overton 12-2 in an elimination game in the early matchup at Centennial Tuesday. The Admirals and Cougars will face-off Wednesday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. with the winner advancing to the district final to face the Bruins in the nightcap.
